Miguel Mejía criticizes President Abinader’s meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio
Santo Domingo.- Miguel Mejía, Secretary General of the United Left Movement (MIU), strongly criticized President Luis Abinader’s reception of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, questioning the intentions behind the visit and the topics discussed. Mejía expressed concerns over the lack of clarity and transparency regarding the meeting, calling for national unity to protect the country’s sovereignty and economy.
He particularly questioned the announcement about U.S. involvement in rare earth exploration in the Dominican Republic, highlighting that it was Rubio, not the Dominican government, who revealed details of a contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Mejía described this as a suspicious and potentially dangerous move that could impact the nation’s security and economic independence.
Mejía also dismissed Rubio’s promises on energy development, medical technology, and security as empty, calling them “consolation candy.” He criticized Rubio’s lack of concrete solutions on issues like Haiti’s crisis and the exclusion of countries like Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela from the upcoming Summit of the Americas. Additionally, Mejía condemned the seizure of a Venezuelan plane by the U.S., stating that no foreign authority should have the power to confiscate property on Dominican soil.
The entire visit content was quite transparent and nothing “evil” was on the calendar. Insomuch of Haiti, that is not the US’s situation to correct. Only Haiti can fix Haiti. Both the DR and US should be concentrating on removing illegally present citizens of Haiti from their soil. Again, Only Haiti can fix Haiti short of a complete takeover and annexation by another country.
