Vice President Raquel Peña launches “Reading Parties” to promote youth literacy
Santiago de los caballeros.- Vice President of the Dominican Republic, Raquel Peña, has announced the launch of the “Reading Parties” initiative, aimed at fostering a love for books among young people and reducing screen time. Speaking as head of the Education Cabinet, Peña emphasized the importance of creating engaging literary experiences that blend solitary reading with social interaction. She also highlighted the need to modernize libraries, making them more accessible and appealing to new generations.
The announcement was made during Peña’s keynote address, “Reflections on Reading and Libraries as Bridges of Knowledge,” at an event marking National Student Day. Hosted by El Ateneo Amantes de la Luz in Santiago, the institution celebrates its 150th anniversary as a cultural and educational pillar. Its president, Carlos Manuel Estrella, called for a public-private partnership to modernize the historic library, ensuring it continues to serve as a beacon of knowledge. The event brought together students, educators, government officials, business leaders, and media representatives.
