International tender launched for Ozama River bridge construction

Santo Domingo.- For the first time, all Dominican embassies will publish the international tender for constructing a bascule bridge over the Ozama River, replacing the current floating bridge. The Ministry of Public Works (MOPC) announced this initiative after receiving confirmation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mirex).

Mirex has distributed the tender to Dominican embassies abroad and foreign embassies accredited in the Dominican Republic. Ambassadors have been asked to share the information with relevant companies and organizations in their respective countries to attract potential bidders.

The new bascule bridge will connect Francisco Caamaño Deñó Avenue (formerly Avenida del Puerto) with Malecón Avenue in Villa Duarte. It will replace the aging floating bridge, which remains in use as a key link between the National District and Santo Domingo Este.

How long will it take to construct such a bridge in the RD? For example: the Beldon Bly bascule bridge in Lynn, MA., USA has been under construction since 2020. It is not finished yet.

So a Dominican company would not be capable to do this ?

No, because it involves technology that local engineers and technicians are unfamiliar with. A bridge of this type has never been constructed in the country before.
