Aerodom defends regulations amid Rent a Car complaints

Santo Domingo.- Aerodom, the company managing Dominican airports, responded to complaints from the Rent a Car sector in La Caleta, stating that it does not prohibit informal rental operators but ensures that only businesses meeting legal regulations operate within its facilities. The company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a secure and organized environment for passengers.

In coordination with authorities, Aerodom enforces security measures based on Law No. 188-11 on Airport and Civil Aviation Security. Recent efforts include strengthening control measures in public arrival areas to prevent unauthorized rental operations. The company cited complaints about deceptive practices, passenger harassment, and poor service quality from some unlicensed providers, which negatively impact the airport’s reputation and the country’s image as a tourist destination.

Aerodom emphasized that all airport personnel must have official identification per the National Civil Aviation Security Program. The company assured that these measures are not arbitrary but part of a broader effort to uphold security and service standards at Dominican airports.

I agree with Aerodom on this one. Some of these folks are out of control trying to get you to rent a car that’s not regulated by the RD.

Agree with El Duro’s comment but in addition, the whole rental car situation in the DR needs improving. Same situation at all airports (though Las Americas has admittedly gotten better. ) Your choice is to go with the official rental chains Avis, Hertz, Dollar, Europcar etc.) which are really just franchises (not company-owned) so you get taken when you show up and the car you reserved isn’t there (it never was) or you’re forced into taking more insurance than the legally-required Liability which is often more than the cost of the rental itself and you have no choice but to suck it up and accept it if you want the car. The alternate is an unlicensed provider which brings with it a whole other set of issues as the article brings out. And with either, make sure you take photos from every angle before driving away because they’ll inspect it like a hawk when you return it insisting you cause that badly rusted scratch somehow during your 2 day rental.
