Ex-Haitian senator André Michel faces border tension in Dajabón

Dajabón.- Former Haitian senator André Michel faced a hostile crowd at the Haiti-Dominican Republic border in Dajabón on Thursday, as protesters attempted to attack him while he crossed the bridge. The demonstrators, accusing him of involvement in the 2021 assassination of former Haitian President Jovenel Moïse, were dispersed by officers from the Specialized Corps for Land Border Security (CESFRONT), who successfully intervened to prevent further violence.
Michel has been a controversial figure in Haitian politics, frequently accused of destabilizing the country and maintaining ties with criminal organizations in Port-au-Prince, including Vitel’Homme Innocent, a gang leader linked to arms trafficking. Protesters at the scene voiced outrage, alleging his legal support for gang leaders and incitement of violence against Moïse before his death.
In response, CESFRONT has reinforced security in Dajabón, but Dominican authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding Michel’s attempt to enter the country or possible diplomatic actions. The incident underscores the escalating tensions along the border, as Haiti continues to grapple with political instability and security challenges.
