Dominican Republic exports over 30 million eggs to Cuba
Santo Domingo.- Egg exports from the Dominican Republic to Cuba surpassed 30 million units last month, generating over US$20 million. Miguel A. Lajara, of the Dominican Poultry Association (ADA), credited this success to collaboration between producers, the government, and retail chains, reinforcing the country’s role in the regional market. The Dominican poultry industry has also expanded to markets linked to the UK and the Netherlands.
At the “Advances in the Dominican Republic’s Poultry Sector” meeting, held during the 2025 Agricultural Fair, Lajara highlighted the sector’s resilience and growth. He reported a rise in breeding hens from 1.85 million in 2019 to 2.5 million by the end of 2024, driving a projected 26% increase in chicken production for 2025. With 25 hatcheries and 700,000 chickens entering the market daily, the Dominican Republic has emerged as a major poultry producer in Latin America, boasting 1.5 hens per capita.
Lajara also addressed global challenges and opportunities, noting how avian flu in the U.S. and egg smuggling from Mexico have impacted markets. He emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between the government, producers, and retailers to sustain growth and strengthen exports. Officials, including Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz and industry leaders, attended the event, reinforcing support for the sector’s expansion and future stability.
