Barahona to host 4th annual Plantain Festival
Barahona.- Barahona is gearing up for the fourth edition of its Plantain Festival, a celebration of the region’s agricultural identity and culture. Set to take place from May 31 to June 1 on the esplanade of the Guarocuya Hotel, the festival will honor Hecmilio Galván, executive director of the Special Fund for Agricultural Development (FEDA), for his contributions to the province’s rural growth.
The goal is to showcase the plantain’s versatility in Dominican cuisine with dishes like mangú, mofongo, pastelón, and sancocho, and highlight its economic importance—Dominicans consume over 3 billion plantains annually.
The event will coincide with the 10th edition of the “Ruta del Larimar”, led by Galván, during which 16 FEDA activities will be held, including the launch of initiatives such as “Siembra tu Patio,” “Salvando las Montañas,” and “Emprende RD.” These programs focus on rural empowerment through training, financial support, and infrastructure development in Barahona and surrounding areas.
