Army detains 23 Haitians for environmental violations

Dajabón.- During a patrol in the Tirolí area of Restauración, Dajabón province, members of the Dominican Army detained 23 Haitian nationals found in the country without legal immigration status and involved in environmental destruction.

The operation uncovered charcoal kilns, felled trees, sacks of charcoal, and various agricultural tools, along with the seizure of 12 riding animals and an ox with a plow.

The detained group included 7 men, 4 women, and 12 minors, who were transferred to the 10th Infantry Battalion headquarters for further processing.

The seized animals will be handed over to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources for appropriate action.

It is a very rare moment when a Dominicano is arrested for environmental violations. It has to be reasoned there are some ghost Dominicans in the environmental violation chain who manage Haitian laborers. It seems the authorities focus is always on the foreigners, having little or no focus on middlemen, those who manipulate the foreigners.

It is not unheard of that questionable officials with the collaboration of middlemen will arrest Haitian laborers before they, the Haitians, are paid. The officials get a cut from the collaborators, the middlemen pocket the payroll, new victims are hired.
