Demolition begins for construction of new terminal at AILA
Santo Domingo.- Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom) has officially launched the demolition phase of a major construction project at Las Américas International Airport (AILA), aimed at building a new passenger terminal with a US$250 million investment. The new terminal is expected to be completed by 2028 and will operate alongside the existing facility.
According to Aerodom, the initial work includes clearing the site, removing old structures, and installing a temporary perimeter fence to secure the construction area. These efforts are part of the preparatory phase to ensure safe conditions for the next stages of development.
Designed with a modern and sustainable approach, the terminal will accommodate up to 4 million passengers annually, supporting the steady rise in air traffic and enhancing the Dominican Republic’s position as a regional air hub. Aerodom emphasized that the project will boost economic growth and tourism while maintaining full operational capacity at the airport during construction.

This will be a great project for AILA’s growth. A perimeter fence is OK for minimum security. But who and how many of them will watch and maintain the security of the fence and monitoring the construction traffic passing through it? Fear there will be increased criminal activity at the airport by degenerates taking advantage of the project activity chaos. Golden opportunities for potential stowaways are coming.
