New fruit trees are planted on an experimental farm

Minister Limber Cruz plants a new fruit tree.

Constanza— The planting and introduction of new fruit plant varieties began yesterday at an experimental farm in La Culata, Constanza. Among the fruits are macadamia, peach, strawberry, raspberry, persimmon, apple, blueberry, and others, which are being adapted to the Dominican tropical climate and soil through the crop micropropagation laboratory (Biovega).

He said they are doing so to diversify and expand national fruit production and encourage innovation in crops adapted to high-altitude areas.

Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz led the activity and indicated that this pilot project, promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, aims to evaluate the agronomic performance, climate adaptation, and commercial potential of various temperate and subtropical fruit tree species, transforming local production into new plantations and opening up the possibility of exporting new varieties produced in the country.

Minister Cruz was accompanied at the event by fruit specialists, representatives of the agricultural sector, and local producers, including the Deputy Minister of Production and Marketing, Eulalio Ramírez; Miriam Guzmán, of Rural Development; Rafael Ortiz Quezada, of Scientific and Technological Affairs; and Pablo de Moya, the North Central Regional Minister.

Also present were Ernesto Peña Nina, Constanza’s regional agricultural manager; Carlos Viloria, director of Biovega; and Humberto Collado, president of Unaproda, among other notables.
During the event, attendees tasted several exotic fruits being promoted in the area.
