Storm Chantal poses no danger, but these phenomena will cause heavy rains

Santo Domingo.- Although Tropical Storm Chantal recently formed northeast of Florida with sustained winds of 65 km/h, its northward trajectory toward South Carolina does not pose a threat to the Dominican Republic.

However, the country is facing unstable conditions due to Tropical Wave Number 12 and a trough, which will cause significant rainfall during the afternoon and evening of this Saturday.

Weather analyst Jean Suriel explained that these rains will be partially limited by the presence of Saharan dust but warned that “the combination of tropical humidity, trough and extreme heat could generate locally heavy downpours, especially in mountainous and urban areas,” he stressed in his X account.

Suriel also noted that the Caribbean is warming 30% faster than the global average , intensifying events such as heat waves and torrential rains.

Authorities recommend that the public stay informed, avoid crossing swollen rivers, and take precautions against possible urban flooding.
