Punta Catalina refutes fishermen’s compensation demands

Nizao, D.R.- The Punta Catalina Generating Company (EGEPC) has rejected claims from a group of fishermen in Nizao, who allege that the thermoelectric plant’s operations have drastically reduced fish populations and are demanding RD$300 million in compensation. EGEPC maintains that these accusations are not supported by recent social monitoring reports, which show continued productive fishing—particularly of horse mackerel—contributing to the local economy.

The company highlighted its ongoing support for fishermen in Nizao and Don Gregorio through financial aid, monthly incentives, equipment donations, home repairs, and land acquisition for a community fish market. However, EGEPC noted that internal disputes and poor organization among the fishermen’s association have hindered progress and the continuation of some support programs.

EGEPC also expressed concern about unsustainable fishing practices such as trawling and the capture of juvenile fish, warning that these threaten marine biodiversity and long-term economic stability. In response to allegations of chemical waste dumping, the company affirmed its compliance with environmental regulations, stating that all operations are closely monitored under strict government standards.
