Dominican passport rises in global ranking

Santo Domingo.- Presidential spokesperson Homero Figueroa announced that the Dominican Republic’s passport has jumped nine positions in the 2025 Henley Passport Index, now ranking 67th globally. The passport now grants visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 70 countries.

Figueroa attributed this progress to the government’s Zero Bureaucracy program, which has improved the efficiency of passport issuance and reversed years of stagnation in the ranking. The country’s position had remained unchanged since 2017.

The Henley Index, compiled by Henley & Partners, assesses passports based on travel freedom. According to Figueroa, the improved ranking reflects stronger institutions, increased international confidence, and advances in public administration.

DR passport still has a long way to go. Sadly, it is one of the weakest passports in Latam. Countries with a smaller GDP than Dominican Republic have a stronger passport, this says a lot.

Because us Dominicans have a habit of overstaying our visas in foreign countries, it’s kinda in our genetics, unfortunately…

That’s more nuanced, geopolitics play a role in that. The U.S. has many enemies around the world so hence there are certain countries that Americans are not able to enter so easily or at all.

Did its ranking rise because it improved or because some others went down? The term “rose in ranking” is misleading, albeit good click bait.

To understand the Dominican Republic, you must know its history, and have lived during the late 60s, the 70s and the 80s. People, poverty and civility was different from what you are used to. We are a product of a mixed race, the Asian aborigenous Tainos, white Spaniord, and the black/African slaves brought in to work in the hard labor plantations as the Taînos were not used to hard labor and the diseases brought by Spaniors started to mermaid, them. Older people saw the difference in behavior toward the three races as well as their mixes. For instance, if you were white or simply very fair skin with straight hair, you seemed more likeable and benefitted; you had more ealth. If your hair was very curly and your skin was very dark, it was hard to obtain great benefits; you tendded to be poorer than the rest, therefore you had a harder life. Thus, if you were on the dark skin side, the older people would say, “You should marry somebody of light skin, ‘to better the race’.” To BETTER THE RACE meant that your children would be of lighter skin and their hair would be straight, so they would have a better chance in life.
In today’s standards, you can call that racist if the parents of a child refuse to let them marry someone of those dark characteristics, but, “I”, I say thay you should not judge people of the pass by today’s,standards because life today, I may argue, it easier than in the pass. Also, is it not true that modt of the time, people judge others by the way they look? I think we need to stop calling Dominocans racist. Culture also plays a hige role in this dilemma. Dominican people living in the Dominican Republic are used to taking a bath/shower daily two and three times per day. They used deodorant, and many body cream. So, if you have the habit of not taking a shower, changing your clothes for clean ones every time you take a shower so you won’t stink, and not using deodorant, or brushing your teeth, do NOT pretend you will socialize or survive within the dominican society without being put down. If on top of being “dirty,” you are dark skin, you are in trouble there.

I’m sorry but hygiene doesn’t define character. Luckily the culture of the past is slowly fading away… It’s best described as crabs in a barrel… There are no winners just communal pride
