New Dominican ID card to have global reach

Santo Domingo.- The Central Electoral Board (JCE) is advancing a major modernization of the Dominican Republic’s identity and voter registration cards, a move described as “positive, well-structured, and significant” by Ricardo González Hernández, executive director of the Association of State Contractors and Suppliers (ACS). He praised the project’s technical rigor and long-term vision, noting its potential to transform the country’s Civil Registry system.

One of the key features of the new ID cards is their international validity. According to González Hernández, Dominicans living abroad will be able to obtain and use the new cards through consular offices in cities such as New York, Miami, Orlando, Barcelona, and New Jersey—an advancement that places the Dominican Republic ahead of many developed nations in terms of identity services.

In addition to enhanced physical security, the cards will include digital capabilities for real-time identity verification via mobile devices, integrating Dominican citizens into the global digital identity ecosystem. González Hernández compared the project to digital identity systems already in place in countries like Germany, Canada, and Panama, emphasizing that “digital identity is the present.”
