Endangered species in Independencia province

Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has highlighted the presence of multiple threatened animal species in the province of Independencia, according to the 2018 National Red List. These species inhabit key ecosystems such as Lake Enriquillo, the Sierra de Neiba, and surrounding protected areas, and are classified as critically endangered, endangered, or vulnerable.

Among the most at-risk species is the Ricord’s Iguana (Cyclura ricordi), found primarily on Isla Cabritos and nearby rocky zones around Lake Enriquillo, and the Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), which resides in the province’s marine protected areas. Both are listed as Critically Endangered. The American Crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) and the Loggerhead Snake (Epicrates striatus) are classified as Vulnerable, while the Caribbean Flamingo and Great Egret (Grey Heron) are under national protection due to their ecological significance.

These species depend on unique habitats such as wetlands, lagoons, dry forests, and coral reefs. The ministry emphasizes the need for continued conservation efforts and enforcement of protective laws, as these areas fall within critical national parks like Lake Enriquillo and Sierra de Neiba.
