U.S. Embassy issues safety alert as tropical wave triggers red alerts in Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo.- The U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic reported this Friday that the Emergency Operations Center (COE) has placed the National District, Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, San José de Ocoa, and Azua on red alert due to a tropical wave bringing heavy rains, thunderstorms, and strong winds. Eight other provinces remain under yellow alert and five under green alert.
Authorities advised the public to follow safety measures, such as avoiding floodwaters, moving to higher ground if necessary, and staying inside vehicles if caught in fast-moving water. In emergencies, citizens should call 911 or contact POLITUR at 809-200-3500 or through the POLITUR app.
The Embassy also reminded U.S. citizens to keep travel documents updated, review contingency plans, and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at step.state.gov for emergency notifications. Additional preparedness tips are available at Ready.gov.
