23% of vehicles in the country are registered in the name of women.
Santo Domingo, DR — National transportation remains dominated by men on the country’s main streets and avenues, while women, on smaller roads, are taking over, accounting for 23% of the vehicles registered in their names.
Women are on the streets wearing helmets, as 432,256 motorcycles were registered in the name of women, followed by 313,113 automobiles, 244,943 Jeeps, 19,410 buses, and 46,648 vehicles of other categories.
The provinces with the highest percentage of women vehicle owners are located in the eastern part of the country, specifically in Hato Mayor (28.7%), La Altagracia (28.1%), and El Seibo (27.3%), as well as in Peravia (27.7%) and Samaná (27.2%).
This is suggested by data from the General Directorate of Internal Revenue (DGII) up to 2024, collected by the National Statistics Office (ONE), which indicates that the remaining 77% correspond to license plates registered in the names of men.
Among men, motorcycles also stand out, with 1,894,849 registered, 712,256 registered cars, 416,429 registered Jeeps, 79,229 registered buses, and 339,853 registered vehicles of other categories.
These data include private, public, urban, and interurban vehicles, including cargo vehicles, trailers, ambulances, motorcycles, and hearses.
On average, for every 1,000 inhabitants, there are 574 registered automobiles, 327 motorcycles, and 188 passenger vehicles, according to the 2024 motorization rate.
Vehicle fleet
In 2024, the vehicle fleet totaled 6,194,052 units, representing 384,916 more new vehicles than in 2023.
Of this fleet, 57.0% are motorcycles, 18.7% are automobiles, 11.9% are jeeps, and 12.4% are cargo vehicles, buses, and other categories.
In terms of color preference, white, gray, and blue are the most popular colors for cars, with shares of 23.7%, 22.9%, and 12.6%, respectively. For jeeps, the predominant colors are white (28.6%), gray (20.8%), and black (17.4%).
The year 2024 also saw a 40% increase in electric vehicle imports, with 6,640 arrivals compared to 7,731 in 2023.
During that period, there was also a 33% increase in hybrid vehicle imports, with a total of 3,442 compared to 2,589 in 2023.
