Abinader announces RD$2 billion investment in sports infrastructure funded by recovered corruption assets
La Vega.- President Luis Abinader, alongside Sports Minister Kelvin Cruz, announced a groundbreaking investment of two billion pesos in sports infrastructure across La Vega province and 27 municipalities. The funds—sourced from assets recovered in corruption cases—will finance new facilities and major renovations, marking a historic moment for Dominican sports. Abinader emphasized that this initiative represents the first phase of a broader plan to channel recovered public funds into sports, health, and culture, ensuring benefits reach every region of the country.
Minister Cruz detailed that the plan includes the construction of 25 new roofed sports centers in municipalities lacking such facilities. In La Vega, projects will feature the new La Vega Arena with capacity for 4,500 spectators, the remodeling of the baseball stadium, and the reconstruction of the Fernando Teruel Sports Center, which will become the new Volleyball Palace. The project also includes a rebuilt athletics track certified by World Athletics, renovation of the Olympic swimming pool, and upgrades to the handball and tennis courts.
Cruz highlighted that the initiative extends to San Juan de la Maguana and San Pedro de Macorís, where major sports complexes will undergo total renovations, including pavilions for wrestling, karate, gymnastics, and weightlifting. “This is not a promise but a reality in motion,” Cruz said, expressing gratitude to Abinader for transforming recovered funds into opportunities for youth and communities.
