Shooting leaves one injured in abandoned hotel
Sosúa, Puerto Plata – Authorities confirmed that the shooting that occurred early Thursday morning at the former Pam Village Hotel, located in the El Batey area of Sosúa, happened during a conflict between illegal occupants of the complex. A group of individuals allegedly arrived in a white Sonata vehicle and opened fire on those present.
The incident left one man seriously injured. He was identified as Miguel de la Rosa, 39, also known as “La Barba.” He was shot multiple times and is in critical condition at Ricardo Limardo Hospital in Puerto Plata.
According to information obtained by InfoENN, the shooting stemmed from an internal dispute between groups of squatters residing in the former hotel, who are engaged in a conflict over control and management of the occupied apartments.
Police sources revealed that a man known only as “Amparo” was also involved in the incident, identified as one of the participants in the conflict, along with other individuals who fled the scene after the shooting.
The attackers reportedly arrived in a white Sonata vehicle, from which they fired several shots, causing panic among the complex’s occupants and nearby residents. The vehicle was later abandoned and is under investigation.
The Pam Village Hotel, abandoned years ago by its owners, has been taken over by hundreds of people who now live in precarious conditions. Local authorities have acknowledged that a drug den operates there, turning the area into a hotbed of violence and a threat to tourism in the heart of Sosúa.
“That hotel has become a no-man’s-land. All kinds of people live there, and the police are cautious because there’s crime and drug dealing. Sosúa doesn’t deserve that in the middle of a tourist center,” said residents of El Batey.
So far, three people have been arrested for investigation, while the National Police continue their investigation to identify the perpetrators of the attack and clarify the causes of the confrontation.
While reports gathered by journalists at the scene indicate that the shooting, carried out by the unscrupulous individuals, who fled in unknown directions, stemmed from an internal dispute between groups of squatters who had been occupying the hotel rooms for some time, the foreign investors had opted to abandon the hotel and return to their countries of origin.
In recent weeks, violent clashes have erupted over control and management of the invaded rooms, which have worried the population and investors, who are calling for police action.
