MIREX honors Juan Luis Guerra as “Musical and Poetic Heritage of the Dominican Republic”
Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) honored Dominican musician and composer Juan Luis Guerra as a “Musical and Poetic Heritage of the Dominican Republic” during a special panel celebrating his artistic legacy. The event, attended by First Lady Raquel Arbaje and Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez, explored the depth and global impact of Guerra’s four-decade career, which has elevated Dominican music through his poetic mastery and musical innovation in merengue and bachata.
Minister Álvarez highlighted that Guerra’s true greatness lies not only in his many awards but in his ability to capture the Dominican spirit—its humor, faith, and dreams of justice—through moving and imaginative lyrics. A panel moderated by Jochy Herrera and featuring intellectuals Pedro Delgado Malagón, Soledad Álvarez, and César Muñoz reflected on Guerra’s profound influence, emphasizing how his songs have touched hearts and showcased Dominican culture worldwide.
In his remarks, Juan Luis Guerra expressed heartfelt gratitude for the recognition, dedicating his art to his faith and homeland. The ceremony also served to commemorate National Merengue Day and National Bachata Day, reaffirming these genres as powerful tools of cultural diplomacy. The event gathered government officials, diplomats, business leaders, and members of the press, all united in celebrating the enduring cultural legacy of Juan Luis Guerra.
