Dominican Republic launches first artificial intelligence laboratory

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic took a major step toward digital transformation with the inauguration of the Dominican Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (LIAD), an initiative aimed at positioning the country as the Caribbean’s regional hub for artificial intelligence development. The launch ceremony took place at the ChromoMED Institute Auditorium, led by Dr. Gilberto Objío Subero, LIAD’s CEO, and Dr. Bary G. Bigay, its Scientific Director.

LIAD’s mission focuses on fostering research, innovation, and ethical AI applications in areas such as healthcare, education, public administration, justice, agriculture, and industry. During the event, Dr. Objío presented the keynote address “Artificial Intelligence Applied to Clinical Research,” highlighting projects like Medical GPT, a tool designed to enhance diagnostic accuracy, manage medical data, and automate scientific research. He emphasized that the laboratory seeks to boost AI-driven solutions across both public and private sectors, contributing to sustainable development and competitiveness.

With this initiative, the Dominican Republic aims to train specialized talent, promote ethical AI practices, and integrate emerging technologies into public policy—solidifying its role as a leader in artificial intelligence and innovation in the Caribbean.
