Colonial City streets to remain open during December holidays

Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Tourism announced that all streets in Santo Domingo’s Colonial City will remain open throughout the December holidays, with restoration and construction projects resuming in January. The decision aims to facilitate commerce and provide a smooth experience for visitors during the peak tourism season.

Tourism Minister David Collado said the measure will help merchants and business owners benefit from increased economic activity in the area. Engineer Amin Abel Santos, head of the restoration projects, reported that 70% of the heritage streets have already been completed and that teams are working to reopen all sections affected by recent storms before Christmas.

In addition to road improvements, more than 28 projects are underway in the Colonial City, including the restoration of the Ruins of San Francisco, upgrades at the Mercado Modelo, and the rehabilitation of over 150 homes. Five new electric buses will also soon connect key cultural and tourist areas, improving access to the historic center while reducing vehicle congestion.
