Prosecutor’s Office creates specialized unit to combat illicit drug trafficking
Santo Domingo.- The Public Prosecutor’s Office has created the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office Against Illicit Drug Trafficking at the request of Attorney General Yeni Berenice Reynoso. The new unit aims to strengthen the country’s strategy to dismantle drug trafficking and money laundering networks, seize illicit assets, and curb criminal activities that undermine public safety. The decision, supported by the Superior Council of the Public Prosecutor’s Office under Article 53 of Law 133-11, reinforces a strategy that has already produced historic results in seizures, micro-trafficking operations, and international cooperation.
Attorney General Reynoso emphasized that the creation of this office responds to the evolving nature of criminal networks, particularly the rise of synthetic drugs and cryptocurrency-based money laundering. She noted that traditional prosecution models are no longer sufficient, as modern trafficking relies on digital platforms, global distribution channels, and sophisticated methods to conceal profits. The new specialized unit will focus on anticipating trends, tracing digital assets, and coordinating international cooperation in real time, strengthening the country’s ability to confront emerging threats in contemporary drug trafficking.

They need to legalize and tax marijuana and then go after the hard stuff. This would bring in much needed revenue and to target the limited resources of law enforcement to more serious matters.
