Puerto Plata Cable Car nears one year of closure

Puerto Plata.- Nearly a year after the closure of the Puerto Plata Cable Car, local workers and business owners are calling for urgent action to restart operations and avoid further economic damage. During a site visit, Minister of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza met with affected employees and pledged to seek a concrete solution within weeks.

Paliza emphasized the broader impact of the shutdown, calling it a risk to Puerto Plata’s tourism sector. Workers argue the cable car is still functional and say repairing a single tower would restore service. However, Paliza cited unresolved safety and certification issues, noting that no operator is willing to resume services without proper guarantees.

The minister confirmed discussions with international suppliers and announced a meeting with President Luis Abinader to address the situation. He also hinted at plans to upgrade the system’s capacity. Workers, meanwhile, criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the closure and claimed previous certifications supported continued operation.
