Air Canada Cargo inaugurates cargo service at the Punta Cana International Airport

Punta Cana.- Air Canada Cargo has inaugurated its first cargo flight to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) in the Dominican Republic. The service, operated by a Boeing 767 freighter, will run once a week, providing consistent year-round cargo capacity to the region.

The reception ceremony for the inaugural cargo flight was attended by prominent figures such as Frank Elías Rainieri, president & CEO of Grupo Puntacana, and Giovanni Rainieri, Director of Airside Operations at Punta Cana International Airport, among others.

Jon Turner, Air Canada’s Vice President of Cargo, expressed his satisfaction with the new service, highlighting its contribution to the growing network of cargo planes. He emphasized that the addition of Punta Cana as a destination strengthens their ability to serve the country and provide reliable cargo capacity for key customers in the region.

The flight to Punta Cana International Airport is the latest addition to Air Canada Cargo’s global network of cargo flights, which includes recently launched services to various destinations such as San José, Basel, Liège, Dallas, Atlanta, and Bogotá.

The Punta Cana Free Trade Zone (PCFTZ), a Grupo Puntacana company, is also involved in a strategic alliance with DP World, a logistics solutions provider. Together, they are developing a multimodal platform for air, land, and sea cargo handling, solidifying the Dominican Republic’s position as a crucial trade point and logistics hub for the Caribbean. The project benefits from DP World’s expertise and high standards in managing logistics operations, as well as the excellent connectivity of Punta Cana International Airport.

Punta Cana International Airport opened in 1983, is the first private aerodrome for international commercial use in the world. It is the busiest airport in the Dominican Republic, with extensive connectivity to 64 cities and 26 countries. The airport has received multiple awards for its excellence, including being recognized as the “Best Airport by Size and Region” in the Caribbean and Latin America category by the Airports Council International.

Air Canada Cargo, as Canada’s largest air cargo provider, offers reliable air cargo transportation on six continents. With a presence in over 50 countries and self-handling centers in major cities, they utilize Air Canada’s domestic and international passenger and cargo flights to provide seamless connectivity for cargo transportation.

This new cargo flight service to Punta Cana International Airport strengthens the transportation infrastructure in the Dominican Republic and enhances trade opportunities for businesses in the region.

This will help reduce the cargo costs for ultimate shipment destinations in the eastern tourist zone. Less instances of cargo from Canada disembark at Santo Domingo then be transferred over the road to the east. Quicker movement from origin to destination.
