Hoteliers are “prepared” to increase the minimum wage by 12 and 8%.

The president of the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (Asonahores), Juan Bancalari, has informed that hoteliers are willing to readjust their employees’ salaries. However, he maintained that it would be at a lower percentage than that suggested by President Luis Abinader.

According to Bancalari, the hotel sector is prepared to increase by 12% and 8%, as was arranged at the end of February with the minimum wage of the non-sectorized sector. “We had prepared ourselves, in equality with the other sectors, to increase by 12 and 8 percent,” he explained.

The tourism leader said that they had already analyzed a possible wage hike for hotel employees, but since the president proposed a rate, they have met again to examine that proposal,

However, according to Hoy, he insisted that they are already prepared for an increase like the one announced for the minimum wage.

It is recalled that Abinader’s proposal for a 25% increase for the free zone and 30% for the tourism sector not only seeks an economic adjustment for workers in these sectors but will also contribute to the “Dominicanization of labor” in most of these sectors.
