Manatee death in El Morro National Park under investigation

Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Environment is investigating the death of a decomposed manatee found in El Morro National Park. This case is part of a troubling trend, with four manatee deaths reported in the past year at various locations, signaling a need for improved conservation efforts.

Threats to manatees include coastal development, pollution, poaching, and climate change. The Ministry’s conservation program involves monitoring and responding to strandings. The National Aquarium assesses stranded manatees and applies specific treatment protocols if needed.

The Ministry, along with the National Environmental Protection Service and the Dominican Navy, is investigating potential causes for manatees leaving the Estero Hondo Sanctuary, including illegal activities and vessel collisions. Conservation efforts are a collective responsibility involving government, NGOs, and the community.
