Airbnb implements global ban on indoor security cameras in rental properties

Airbnb has officially prohibited the use of indoor security cameras in accommodations worldwide, according to an announcement made by the short-term rental platform on Monday.

Previously, Airbnb permitted hosts to install indoor security cameras in common areas, as long as these devices were clearly specified on the listing page and visibly placed within the home. However, the use of indoor security cameras was never allowed in private spaces like bedrooms and bathrooms.

In the recent update, Airbnb clarified that interior security cameras are now banned in any property listing, regardless of their location, purpose, or previous disclosure.

Juniper Downs, Airbnb’s Head of Community Policy and Partnerships, stated in a company blog post on Monday, “Our goal was to create new, precise rules that provide our community with greater clarity about what they can expect from Airbnb.” Downs mentioned that the new policy was developed in consultation with guests, hosts, and privacy experts.

The company emphasized that the majority of Airbnb listings currently do not have security cameras, so the policy update will only impact a small group of hosts. Hosts with indoor security cameras are required to remove them by April 30. After this date, violating the new policy may lead to consequences such as the deletion of the host’s account on the platform.

While indoor security cameras are now prohibited, outdoor security cameras, including doorbell cameras, are still allowed on Airbnb. Hosts, however, must inform guests of the presence and general location of outdoor cameras before booking.

The use of indoor security cameras in Airbnb listings has long been a source of frustration for travelers using the platform. The Monday update coincides with a sketch aired on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” about cameras in the bathroom of an Airbnb listing, adding to the ongoing debate surrounding privacy concerns.
