Panama proposes summit in Dominican Republic to address Venezuela crisis

Panama City.- Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino announced that a regional summit initially planned for Panama to address the post-electoral crisis in Venezuela might take place next week in the Dominican Republic. This change of venue coincides with the swearing-in ceremony of Dominican President Luis Abinader for his second term, which many regional leaders will attend.

Mulino revealed that 6-7 presidents had already confirmed their attendance for the summit in Panama. However, given that most of these leaders will be in the Dominican Republic for President Abinader’s inauguration, Mulino suggested holding the meeting there, with Abinader’s permission.

The summit aims to maintain international focus on Venezuela’s crisis following the Organization of American States (OAS) vote on July 31, where 17 countries, including Panama, supported a resolution urging the Venezuelan government to release election results. The initiative failed, which Mulino criticized as “depressing.”
