Brazil condemns massacre in Haiti and calls for international support

Brazil.- The Brazilian government expressed “grave dismay” over the massacre that claimed the lives of over 180 people in Haiti last weekend. In a statement, Brazil’s foreign ministry condemned the violence, which occurred in the Cité Soleil neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, and urged the international community to urgently support Haiti’s transitional government in addressing issues of public security, economic development, and social peace.

The massacre, largely targeting elderly residents with knives and machetes, was reportedly carried out by a criminal gang led by Micanor Altès, known as Wa Mikanò. According to the CDP-Haiti organization, the attack was sparked by the gang leader’s belief, after consulting a voodoo priest, that the elders had used witchcraft to cause his son’s illness and death.

Cité Soleil, a densely populated area plagued by inhumane living conditions, has long been under the control of armed gangs, contributing to the region’s ongoing security crisis.
