Macron backs possible UN Peacekeeping Mission in Haiti

Paris, (EFE).- French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed support for considering a UN peacekeeping operation in Haiti to help address the country’s deepening crisis. During a meeting at the Élysée Palace with Leslie Voltaire, president of Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council, Macron discussed Haiti’s security and political challenges.

The rise of organized criminal gangs and weak governance have displaced one million people and left five million facing food insecurity. France is backing the Haitian National Police as restoring security remains a top priority. Macron emphasized that a stronger UN presence, including a peacekeeping mission, should be explored.

Additionally, France aims to rally European Union partners to support Haiti in combating criminal gangs and preparing for transparent elections. Meanwhile, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot reaffirmed France’s commitment to humanitarian aid and security support during talks with Haitian Foreign Minister Jean-Victor Harvel Jean-Baptiste.
