U.S. halts funding for Haiti security mission

Washington, DC (EFE).- The U.S. government has ordered an immediate stop to its financial contribution to the Multinational Security Mission (MMS) for Haiti, a police support force led by Kenya that remains unformed due to funding shortages. The United Nations confirmed receiving an official notification from the Trump administration to freeze its pledged support.

According to UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric, the U.S. had committed US$15 million to the mission’s trust fund, but only US$1.7 million had been used, leaving US$13.3 million now frozen. This move follows President Trump’s recent executive order suspending U.S. humanitarian aid for 90 days to reassess spending.

While the U.S. has not provided police officers for the mission, it has been the largest financial backer for training. The withdrawal of its funds further complicates an already underfunded initiative, raising concerns about Haiti’s security crisis and the mission’s viability.
