New contingent of Kenyan police arrives in Haiti

Haiti.- A fourth group of 200 Kenyan police officers arrived in Haiti on Thursday to join efforts in combating violent gangs, bringing the total number of Kenyan officers to over 800. They are part of a multinational force that includes personnel from Jamaica, Guatemala, and El Salvador, supporting the Haitian National Police. This deployment aims to strengthen the mission’s ability to restore order, especially as gangs control 85% of Port-au-Prince.

The deployment follows concerns about the suspension of $13.3 million in U.S. funding for the U.N.-backed mission, a result of a broader freeze in foreign aid under President Donald Trump. However, mission force commander Godfrey Otunge reassured that the freeze represents less than 3% of support, and the mission continues with logistical, financial, and equipment backing from the U.S. and other partners. Additionally, the U.S. has approved $40.7 million in waivers for critical support services.

Despite ongoing challenges such as a lack of funding and resources, the mission remains crucial to restoring security in Haiti, where gang violence has left thousands displaced. Experts like William O’Neill emphasize that the mission’s success is vital for long-term stability in Haiti and reducing migration pressures.
