American citizens’ safety is Embassy’s first function: US Envoy

Santo Domingo.- US ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Robin Bernstein, on Tuesday said the manner in which an American tourist was beaten in a hotel in the east region is an unfortunate situation but “a very timely event.”

Baltimore native Tammy Lawrence Daley was brutally beaten in a hotel in Punta Cana in January and complained that Dominican authorities failed to conduct a responsible investigation

Bernstein said the United States Embassy’s first function in the country is to secure the safety of American citizens, but noted that “Americans come to enjoy the beautiful beaches and the rich culture of the Dominican people, unfortunately there are times that things happen.”
