Dominican Republic Catholic Church opposes wall at Haiti border

Santo Domingo.- Cardinal Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez affirmed Sunday that the proposed wall along the Haiti border wouldn’t halt the entry of illegal aliens into the Dominican Republic, and would instead become another conflictive factor with that nation.

"That’s a very contentious issue, which would be adding more wood to the fire, which I don’t think will solve the problem, no," the prelate said.

The Archbishop of Santo Domingo said the more suitable choice which could yield better results is to follow up on the National Regularization Plan launched early June to control the immigration of thousands of mostly Haitian illegal immigrants into Dominican Republic, with more than 55,000 people registered thus far.

The Catholic Church’s top bishop spoke to reporters after officiating a mass at the Perpetuo Socorro church at the Simón Bolívar sector.
