Haiti.– Nearly 400 Kenyan gendarmes, deployed to Haiti in October to assist local authorities in combating violence, are now trapped in the country, facing over 12,000 members of violent gangs. These gangs control large parts of Haiti and are responsible for kidnappings, extortion, and assaults, contributing to a severe humanitarian crisis.
The Kenyan forces, tasked with both police and military duties, were sent to support a promised multinational intervention. However, the intervention never materialized, leaving the gendarmes isolated and without reinforcements in an increasingly dangerous environment. Despite their specialized training, limited resources and the lack of additional support have made it difficult for them to control the escalating violence.
International human rights organizations are calling for urgent global action to prevent further violence and assist the overwhelmed peacekeepers.
