Tensions rise between Verón and Higüey after breakdown of cooperation agreement

La Altagracia.- During recent public hearings, the rupture of the cooperation agreement between the municipalities of Verón and Higüey revealed growing tensions, raising concerns across civil society in La Altagracia province. Community leaders and organizations warned that the lack of coordination could hinder the region’s balanced development, stressing that the progress of one municipality must not come at the expense of another.

Speakers emphasized the importance of empathy and a shared vision among political leaders to ensure fair treatment of all communities. Concerns were raised about the neglect of rural and impoverished areas such as Río Duey, Río Quisibaní, and Siete Lagunas, where poverty and lack of services remain critical. Participants urged that tourism and urban growth be paired with strategies that uplift traditional sectors like livestock farming and address rural needs.

Environmental issues were also spotlighted, particularly the impact of disorganized settlements on water resources. While economic growth in Bávaro and Punta Cana was acknowledged, it was stressed that sustainable territorial planning is essential. Speakers honored the social efforts that have fueled Verón’s development and warned that growing inequality could reignite conflict. The overall message was clear: Verón and Higüey must move forward together through cooperation, equity, and mutual respect.
