NYC shooting at Park Avenue skyscraper kills five, including an NYPD officer
New York.- A gunman stormed the lobby of 345 Park Avenue, home to Blackstone, the NFL headquarters and other major firms, shortly before 6:30 p.m. Monday, killing five people, including an NYPD officer, and wounding at least six others before taking his own life, law enforcement sources told the New York Post.
The suspect, identified as 27‑year‑old Shane Devon Tamura, entered the 44‑story office tower during rush hour carrying a rifle and opened fire on civilians and responding officers, sources said. Eyewitnesses described a rapid series of shots that sent bystanders scrambling for cover as alarmed tenants evacuated the building.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the shooter was found dead on the 33rd floor of a self‑inflicted gunshot wound and that the scene was secured by around 8 p.m. “This was an act of senseless violence,” Tisch said, offering condolences to the victims’ families and praising first responders for their quick action.
According to the Post’s live updates, four civilians and one officer were pronounced dead at the scene, while six people, including two additional officers, were hospitalized with serious injuries. Tamura had entered the lobby directly and began firing before ascending to the upper floors.
Terrorism does not appear to be a factor in the attack, sources told the Post. Investigators are probing how Tamura obtained the weapon and whether he had any accomplices. The FBI and ATF have joined the NYPD’s investigation.
345 Park Avenue sits steps from the NYPD’s 17th Precinct and is surrounded by luxury hotels and student housing. City officials have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers, while Park and Lexington Avenues remain closed between East 52nd and East 53rd Streets as detectives collect evidence.
Mayor Eric Adams praised the coordinated police response and vowed to enhance security measures in Manhattan’s commercial corridors. “New York stands firm against violence,” he said. “We will continue to protect our city and support those affected by this tragedy.”
