Young Dominican honored at International Math Competition

Santo Domingo.- Miguel Ángel Hernández Lora, a student at the Santo Domingo Institute of Technology (INTEC), has made history as the first Dominican to participate and be recognized in the 2025 International Mathematics Competition (IMC), held in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. The IMC, one of the world’s most prestigious university-level math contests, hosted 434 students this year, including top talent from global institutions such as ETH Zurich, RWTH Aachen, and St. Petersburg State University.

Despite having just completed his first year of university, Miguel Ángel earned an Honorable Mention, outperforming peers from elite universities. He was one of only four participants from Latin America and the sole representative of the Dominican Republic—making his accomplishment especially notable given the competition’s increased difficulty and stricter recognition criteria in 2025.

This milestone not only celebrates Miguel Ángel’s individual talent but also showcases the growing STEM potential in the Dominican Republic.
