Macron to visit Dominican Republic in 2026 to inaugurate Santiago Monorail
Santo Domingo.- During the launch ceremony for new trains on Line 1 of the Santo Domingo Metro, President Luis Abinader announced that French President Emmanuel Macron has committed to visiting the Dominican Republic in the first quarter of next year to inaugurate the Santiago Monorail project, funded by the French Development Agency—the same agency behind the Santo Domingo Metro. Abinader praised the support of the French government and the UN in strengthening the country’s transportation system and expressed confidence in Macron’s visit to show gratitude.
Santo Domingo is advancing an integrated transportation plan launched between 2021 and 2022 that combines mass transit projects with critical road infrastructure improvements aimed at easing congestion and modernizing mobility. President Abinader shared that the city is preparing to inaugurate a new roadway solution at the heavily congested “Pinturas” intersection in October, along with upgrades to Plaza de la Bandera, the north-south tunnel connection, and drainage improvements on Luperón Avenue. These projects are designed to optimize traffic flow, reduce bottlenecks, and improve transit efficiency for residents.
