Tourism inaugurates restoration of 15 heritage facades in Colonial City
Santo Domingo.- Tourism Minister David Collado inaugurated the restoration of 15 heritage facades of high architectural and cultural value in the Colonial City, reaffirming the government’s commitment to preserving this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The project, with an investment of more than RD$29 million, focused on the conservation, maintenance, and restoration of exterior facades of both religious and civil monuments.
The interventions included emblematic sites such as the Museum of the Royal Houses, the Pantheon of the Nation, and several churches, including Las Mercedes, San Lázaro, Regina Angelorum, and the First Dominican Evangelical Church. Other restored spaces were the sanctuary of Our Lady of Altagracia, the parish of San Miguel, various chapels, and the Hermitage of San Antón. Collado emphasized that these monuments are key attractions for both local and international visitors.
Restoration works involved specialized cleaning, biocidal and fungicidal treatments, structural consolidation with natural lime, application of breathable paints, water-repellent protection, and the replacement of deteriorated elements. All tasks followed international principles of heritage preservation and were carried out in collaboration with the National Directorate of Monumental Heritage, using expert techniques and materials adapted to current needs.
