Dominican Republic showcases renewable energy and technology plans in China
China.- José Antonio Balaguer, leader of the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) and Senate advisor, presented the main challenges and opportunities of the Dominican Republic’s electricity system at the China-Latin America Energy Cooperation Forum 2025 in Shenzhen. Organized by the Latin American Energy Organization (Olade) and Huawei, his presentation, titled “Power Grid Challenges and Emerging Energy Storage Development Trends in the Dominican Republic,” highlighted the country’s move toward energy storage systems to strengthen national energy security.
Balaguer emphasized the development of pumped storage plants powered by solar and wind energy as a sustainable way to store electricity during low demand and release it when needed. He noted that rapid economic growth over the past 15 years has led to increasing energy consumption, making it crucial to diversify the generation matrix and enhance infrastructure. He also addressed the sector’s financial and technical challenges, including the heavy electricity subsidy burden, collection deficits, and the need to improve transmission networks and integrate modern inverters and battery storage systems.
Highlighting the ongoing 600 MW renewable energy tender, Balaguer explained that half of the capacity will include storage batteries to provide clean energy and essential grid services such as frequency regulation and black start. He praised international cooperation, technical exchanges with China, and the forum organized by Olade and Huawei, noting that these experiences will inform the country’s energy strategy. “We reaffirm our commitment to a sustainable, modern, and secure electricity system, aligned with regional integration and global energy transition goals,” he concluded.
