Chef Tita joins global #SinDesperdicioChallenge to fight food waste
Santo Domingo.- Renowned Dominican chef Tita has joined the #SinDesperdicioChallenge, a global initiative by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), following an invitation from chef Heinz Wuth. As part of the challenge, she demonstrated how to use every part of the plantain, encouraging zero-waste cooking, and challenged chefs Pablo Diaz Quiñonez and Pablo Bonilla from Guatemala to share their food-saving practices.
The campaign aims to raise awareness about food loss and waste, a global issue in which 1.3 billion tons of food are lost or wasted annually, while over 2.3 billion people face food insecurity. Food waste is also a major environmental concern, producing 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions and consuming nearly 30% of agricultural land. In Latin America and the Caribbean, households are responsible for 75% of this waste, highlighting both ethical and economic implications.
The initiative coincides with the International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste on September 29, which promotes action toward Sustainable Development Goal 12.3: halving food waste by 2030.
