SDE Mayor travels to Miami to seek support for Ozama River cleanup
Miami, Florida.- The mayor of Santo Domingo Este, Dío Astacio, began a work mission in Miami, United States, aimed at identifying innovative technologies and specialized consulting to address the long-standing pollution of the Ozama River. Astacio emphasized that the river has been an environmental hazard and a source of disease for decades, impacting the lives of thousands of residents.
Accompanied by Councilwoman Ailenn De Camps, biologist Lemuel Familia, Sol De Camps, and other technical experts, the mayor explored solutions modeled on successful cleanup efforts from the Miami River over the past 20 years. He also expressed gratitude to the Honorable Consul of Miami, Geanilda Vázquez, for facilitating connections that support international collaboration.
Astacio highlighted the support of organizations like Green Cross, which will contribute to designing a comprehensive rescue plan combining technology, international cooperation, and civic education. “The recovery of the Ozama is not just an environmental challenge; it’s a life mission for our generation. This river must transform from a problem into a symbol of sustainability and renewal,” he concluded.
