Chinese community in Dominican Republic celebrates Mid-Autumn Festival
Santo Domingo.- The Chinese community in the Dominican Republic celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival on Sunday in Chinatown, coinciding with the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The event featured a vibrant program of music, the Lion Dance, children’s performances, and traditional cuisine, along with rituals such as the presentation of red envelopes and the distribution of over 400 gifts, highlighting goodwill and hospitality.
Rosa Ng Báez, president of the Flor Para Todos Foundation, emphasized the 161 years of Chinese presence in the Dominican Republic and their contribution to national development. She noted the milestone of formal diplomatic ties in 2018 and China’s assistance during the pandemic. Ng also urged Dominican authorities to support Chinese companies currently facing challenges, while thanking collaborators and institutions for making the event possible.
The celebration brought together Zhou Yuqi, counselor of the Chinese Embassy, leaders of the Chinese Colony, and descendants of pioneers who strengthened ties since the 19th century. It closed with the screening of the documentary “Migrants” and a tribute to Dominicans who traveled to China in the 1960s and 1970s, reaffirming the cultural and historic bonds between the two nations.
