Abinader welcomes UN approval of new Haiti Gang Suppression Force

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader celebrated the approval of the new United Nations Gang Suppression Force, which will replace the ineffective Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti. Composed of 5,500 members, this new force will be responsible for restoring order and confronting gang violence in the neighboring country. Abinader highlighted that the Dominican Republic played a decisive role in this diplomatic achievement, leading efforts alongside allied nations to push for a stronger international response.

The president stressed that this milestone reflects years of consistent work and diplomatic pressure, including a joint letter sent to the UN Security Council signed by Abinader and former Dominican presidents Leonel Fernández, Hipólito Mejía, and Danilo Medina. He underscored that the force, backed and financed by the UN, will have a robust mandate and be carefully supervised to ensure its effectiveness.

Abinader also reminded that since 2021 he has urged the international community to take decisive action in Haiti, considering its crisis a threat to regional peace and security. He praised the leadership of the United States and Panama in sponsoring the resolution and reaffirmed the Dominican Republic’s commitment to support the mission’s implementation. The president expressed confidence that this step will contribute to Haiti’s political, social, and economic recovery, while strengthening stability across the region.
