Senate approves first reading of Labor Code reform

Santo Domingo.- The Senate of the Dominican Republic approved on first reading the organic bill that reforms Law 16-92, the Labor Code, marking a major step toward modernizing labor legislation. The initiative, presented by several senators and supported by 29 votes, seeks to adapt the legal framework to technological advances and the current labor market. According to Senator Rafael Barón Duluc, who chaired the Special Commission that studied the bill, this reform represents a structural shift in labor law with language aligned to international standards.

The proposal introduces flexible work arrangements, recognition of remote work with guarantees such as the right to disconnect, and measures ensuring equality among employees. It also strengthens union and collective rights, guaranteeing the freedom to organize without employer interference, protection against anti-union practices, and the right to collective bargaining. Lawmakers emphasized that the reform aims to foster fairer, more inclusive labor relations without undermining productivity or competitiveness.

In addition to the labor reform, the Senate also approved in first reading several commemorative bills. These include the declaration of February 8 as National Day of the Dominican Obstetrician and Gynecologist, July 3 as National Decorum Day—while elevating the monument honoring the heroes of La Barranquita to National Monumental Heritage—and June 7 as National Day of the Dominican Neonatologist.
