Marco Rubio backs postponement of Summit of the Americas

Washington.- The United States government expressed its gratitude to President Luis Abinader for his cooperation and willingness to host the next Summit of the Americas, which will now take place in 2026 in the Dominican Republic. The event, initially planned for this year, was postponed following a joint decision between the Dominican government, the United States, the Organization of American States (OAS), and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

In an official statement, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio conveyed Washington’s appreciation to President Abinader, highlighting the Dominican Republic’s leadership and commitment to regional cooperation. Rubio reaffirmed U.S. support for the decision to reschedule the summit, emphasizing that the postponement will allow countries more time to prepare stronger proposals and reach broader consensus on shared priorities.

The upcoming 2026 Summit of the Americas will focus on strengthening regional alliances, promoting democratic governance, enhancing security cooperation, and advancing sustainable development throughout the hemisphere. Both governments agreed that rescheduling the event ensures more effective planning and will help achieve concrete results that generate tangible benefits for citizens across the Americas.

Sounds more likely that the US did not want to be involved in a Summit of the Americas meeting whilst taking offence action against a number of South American countries. Better to postpone it until next year when the dust may have settled.
