Nearly 6,000 deaths each year in DR due to myocardial infarction

Santo Domingo.– CardiologistFulgencio Severino said that in the Dominican Republic there are about twomillion people with hypertension, nearly one million suffer from highcholesterol and over 50% of the adult population is overweight.

Interviewed byjournalist Federico Mendez for a Sunday program in Santo Domingo TV, doctorSeverino said cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of deaths in thecountry.

"We areregistering 6,000 deaths every year from acute myocardial infarction orischemic heart disease," the expert pointed out.

According toSeverino, many of those deaths are preventable, with just changing people’slifestyles and implementing health policies to reduce the pollutionlevels associated with cardiovascular deaths.
