Haiti wants to negotiate deportations with Dominican Republic

Port-au-Prince .- Haitian president Michel Martelly on Monday reiterated his government’s commitment to seek a "peaceful solution" to its immigration conflict with Dominican Republic, during his meeting with the Organization of American States (OAS) mission which visited Santo Domingo over the weekend, EFE reports.

Echoing Haiti Foreign minister Lener Renauld’s request at the OAS last week, Martelly called on the international community to intervene in what he considers a crisis.

To force Dominican Republic to negotiate the conditions to carry out the possible deportations requires the international community’s “strong involvement," the Haitian leader tweeted. "Haiti would rather stay on the negotiating table with (Republic) Dominican to resolve the crisis peacefully."

An OAS delegation headed by Political Affairs secretary Francisco Guerrero arrived in Haiti Sunday to address the immigration problem with Dominican Republic.

Sources quoted by EFE said the OAS visit to Dominican territory was "uplifting, positive and constructive."
